Cutting back : Time to say goodbye

Writer's picture: LauraLaura

February is the moment to welcome in the start of spring saying goodbye to the biscuit tones of the deciduous grasses and skeletal perennials seedheads that have looked so beautiful on frosty days. Leaving them until now provides homes for insects and bugs and food for hungry birds. Add the cuttings to the compost pile to rot down and add to next year's mulch in the garden's process of renewal. The new green shoots will benefit from last year's garden waste aptly named 'black gold' for its enriching properties.
