A site analysis of the garden showed the terrace at the back of the new extension could remain with the addition of some large pots. In the new design the lower garden is transformed by hedging blocks which divide the garden into three pausing spaces.  The original garden was a poorly performing lawn with a hollow apple tree to the rear and no other planting. The lower seating area is now surrounded by woodland edge planting with the existing Prunus providing the upper canopy.  The middle layer includes shrubs, hedging and perennials. Further interest is in the understory with ground cover planting to complete the planting community. The introduction of textures and layers of planting provides a significant benefit to nature and a visual feast. A new shed and small productive garden is to the rear. Painting the fence dark gives the garden the cohesion it lacked and adds a dramatic backdrop to highlight the textural planting.  A path of self-binding gravel inset with clay pavers balances the formality of the layout and leads you on a journey through the garden.
